SAN FRANCISCO – Giants manager Bruce Bochy crushed a softball question at Giants FanFest. He confirmed that Madison Bumgarner would be his opening-day pitcher April 4 at Milwaukee.
Jeff Samardzija and Johnny Cueto are expected to follow Bumgarner in one form or another. But even after investing $220 million in those two new additions, the announcement on an opening-day starter was as subtle as one of Bumgarner’s hatchet swings.
Bumgarner will be making his third opening-day start after drawing the assignment for the first time in 2014. He’s 1-1 in those assignments after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks last year.
Bochy answered the question on the Q&A stage at FanFest, which drew its usual throngs on Saturday but perhaps wasn’t quite as packed as the events that followed the World Series titles in 2012 and ’14.
Not every question from fans was a softball. One of them stood up and said, “This is for Bochy. As a Red Sox fan, would you please take back Pablo (Sandoval)?”
Moderator Kate Scott wisely interrupted and moved on to the next one.
